Inclusion and school support: Why the two are inseparably linked
Inclusion does not begin only in the classroom. It is a task for society as a whole. But how does it work in everyday school life in very practical terms? TeamLike Schulbegleitung supports children with support needs on their educational journey and knows from experience: without individual assistance, inclusion often remains a wish rather than a lived reality. In this article, we show why school support is a central building block for an inclusive school.
Many children with special educational needs encounter barriers in everyday mainstream school life—whether in learning, in social situations, or in daily routines. School support helps to break down these barriers and enable participation. It supports children individually, in lessons, in social interaction, and with practical life tasks.

- help during breaks, with personal hygiene, or with getting dressed
- mediate in social conflicts
- strengthen self-confidence and independence
The specific design depends on the child’s individual needs—and that is exactly what makes the work demanding, but also particularly effective.
Inclusion needs reliable structures
Inclusion does not happen by itself. For it to succeed, it requires not only legal foundations, but also reliable support services in everyday life. School support workers make an indispensable contribution: they enable children to attend a mainstream school and thus learn together with their peers.
Despite its high value, school support is still not sufficiently established in many places. There is a lack of uniform qualification standards, professional recognition, and stable working conditions. Frequent staff changes make it harder to build trust. This is a problem, because the reliable relationship between the child and the support worker is a key success factor. At TeamLike Schulbegleitung, we therefore advocate for professional, well-supported, and valued school support work. We see it as our responsibility to strengthen children individually and to support professionals sustainably.
In the long term, the goal is an education system that does justice to all children, regardless of disability or support needs. Until then, school support remains an indispensable part of the path toward an inclusive school. We see ourselves not only as companions for children, but as co-creators of a fair and diverse educational landscape. Because every child has a right to participation.
